It's shores are marshy and is a brackish water mix which supports a diverse ecosystem. Lately, there have been efforts of shoreline restoration as well as oyster bed projects.

The local economy surrounding the Great Wicomico River is deeply tied to the water itself. Fishing, crabbing, and especially oyster harvesting has long been central to livelihoods in the region, shaping both the culture and economy of nearby communities like Reedville. While commercial seafood industries provide jobs and income, they also support related businesses such as marinas, boat services, and processing facilities, making the health of the river essential to the well-being of the local economy.
